Look, I’ve Seen the Future, and It’s a Mess

Let me tell you something, folks. I’ve been around the tech block a few times. Started back in ’98, fresh out of college, thinking I was gonna change the world with my committment to open-source. Ha! Now I’m just trying to make sense of this AI circus.

Last Tuesday, I was at a conference in Austin. You know the type—too many hoodies, not enough showers. Some hotshot from a company I’ve never heard of (let’s call him Marcus) gets on stage and starts talking about how AI is gonna cure cancer, solve world hunger, and do our taxes. I mean, come on. Even the slides were smug.

I turned to my friend Lisa, who’s been in this game longer than I have. She just rolled her eyes and said, “Remember when we used to have to actually code things? Good times.” Which… yeah. Fair enough.

But Here’s the Thing

I’m not saying AI is all bad. I’m saying we’re all jumping in too fast. Like lemmings with a death wish. You ever see a lemming? They don’t even know where they’re going. That’s us right now.

Take chatbots, for example. Everyone’s so excited about these things. “Oh, they’re gonna revolutionize customer service!” Yeah, sure, until you try to have a conversation with one and it starts talking about the weather in 1893. I had this happen to me last month. It was completley absurd. I asked it about a product, and it started going on about some old-timey weather event. I was like, “Okay, buddy, I just wanted to know if this widget comes in blue.”

And don’t even get me started on deepfakes. I saw a video last week of some politician saying something outrageous. Turns out, it was a deepfake. The guy hadn’t even said those words. It was so convincing, though. I mean, I’m not sure how we’re gonna determing what’s real and what’s not anymore.

We’re All Gonna Need a Guide

This is why I’m glad people are talking about mental health in tech. It’s not all about the code and the algorithms. We need to take care of ourselves, too. I found this great resource, ruh sağlığı farkındalık rehberi, that’s all about being aware of your mental state. It’s kinda like a tech support for your brain. Honestly, we could all use a little of that right now.

I was talking to my colleague Dave about this the other day. He’s a big AI guy, always going on about how it’s the future. I said, “Dave, what about the people? What about the humans who actually have to use this stuff?” He just laughed and said, “That’s not my department.” Which, honestly, is a problem right there.

Let’s Talk About the Elephant in the Room

And look, I get it. AI is exciting. It’s new. It’s shiny. But we can’t just ignore the elephant in the room. The one that’s stomping around, breaking stuff, and generally making a mess. That elephant is the lack of regulation. We’re all just kinda winging it, hoping for the best. And that’s not gonna work.

I was at a panel discussion a few months ago, and this professor from MIT was talking about the need for regulation. Some guy in the audience shouted out, “That’ll stifle innovation!” The professor just sighed and said, “No, it’ll save lives.” And honestly, he’s not wrong. We need some rules here. Some guidelines. Some… I dunno, adult supervision.

But here’s the thing. We’re not gonna get that anytime soon. Because everyone’s too busy chasing the next big thing. The next big acquisition. The next big… whatever. We’re all so focused on the future that we’re forgetting about the present. And the present is a mess.

So What Do We Do?

I don’t know, folks. I really don’t. I wish I had some grand solution. Some magic wand to wave and make everything better. But I don’t. All I can do is write about it. Talk about it. Hope that maybe, just maybe, someone out there is listening.

In the meantime, we gotta take care of ourselves. We gotta be aware of what’s going on. We gotta be smart. And we gotta be kind. To each other, and to ourselves.

So, yeah. That’s my take on the AI gold rush. It’s a mess. It’s exciting. It’s terrifying. And it’s only just begun.
