Let’s Talk About Your Data, Shall We?
Look, I’m gonna be honest with you. I’m not one of those tech journalists who’ll feed you some feel-good BS about how AI is gonna save the world. Nope. I’ve been in this game since the dial-up days, and I’ve seen enough to know that every shiny new tech has a dark side. And AI? It’s like that friend who’s always borrowing money and saying they’ll pay you back. You know the one.
I remember back in 2008, this guy Marcus (let’s call him Marcus because I don’t wanna get sued) told me over beers at this dive bar in Austin, ‘Tech’s gonna change everything, man. We’re living in the future!’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure, Marcus. Right after they invent cold fusion and world peace.’
Fast forward to today. AI’s everywhere. It’s in your phone, your car, even your damn toaster. And it’s collecting data. Oh, it’s collecting alot of data. You think Siri’s just there to tell you the weather? Please. She’s selling your soul to the highest bidder. Or at least, that’s what my friend Dave, who’s kinda paranoid but probably right, told me last Tuesday.
But What Can You Do About It?
So, you’re probably thinking, ‘Okay, smartass, if AI’s so bad, what am I supposed to do? Live in a cave?’ First off, don’t be a smartass back to me. Second, there are some things you can do. None of them are perfect, but hey, neither is life.
First, read the terms of service. I know, I know, it’s like reading a phone book written in Latin. But if you care about your data, you gotta do it. Or at least, skim it. Look for stuff about data collection, sharing, all that jazz. And if it’s too complicated, ask yourself: do you really need this app? Is it worth giving up your privacy for?
Second, use a VPN. I’m not gonna tell you which one because, honestly, I’m not an expert. But do some research, find one you trust, and use it. It’s like putting a lock on your door. It won’t stop a determined burglar, but it’ll stop the casual opportunist.
And third, stay informed. Follow political news analysis today and other tech news sites. Know what’s going on. Because the more you know, the better you can protect yourself.
But Here’s the Thing…
I’m not saying AI is all bad. It’s done some amazing things. It’s helped doctors find cures, scientists make breakthroughs, and yeah, even helped me find the best route to avoid traffic. But it’s also a tool. And like any tool, it can be used for good or evil. It’s up to us to make sure it’s used for good.
And look, I’m not saying you should become a hermit and never use technology again. That’s not practical. But be smart. Be cautious. And for the love of all that’s holy, stop posting your life story on social media. Nobody cares, and it’s just giving AI more data to play with.
So, that’s my take. Take it or leave it. I’m just here to give you the messy truth. The rest is up to you.
Oh, and one more thing. If you see Marcus, tell him I said hi. And that he still owes me $20.

She’s written for major publications, interviewed more tech CEOs than she can count, and has a love-hate relationship with AI. When she’s not writing, she’s probably arguing with Siri or trying to convince her cat to use a tech gadget. She’s based in Austin, Texas, and yes, she does live in a house, not a cave.
